Is It Cheaper to Stay at a Universal Hotel with Express Pass or Buy It Separately?
Last updated: October 9, 2026

Staying at Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, or Loews Portofino Bay Hotel can be cheaper than booking a lower-priced Universal Orlando hotel and buying Express Unlimited separately. The better value depends on your travel dates, number of registered hotel guests, and how many days you will spend at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure.
These three hotels include Universal Express Unlimited for registered guests. The included benefit does not cover Universal Epic Universe or Universal Volcano Bay, and separate theme park admission is required.
Before choosing a hotel, compare the total cost of your room and the Express access you actually want. A lower nightly rate does not always mean a lower vacation cost.
Which Universal Orlando hotels include Express Pass?
Three Universal Orlando hotels include complimentary Universal Express Unlimited:
Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Hard Rock Hotel
Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
The benefit gives registered hotel guests access to shorter Express queues at participating attractions in Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure.
You may hear these properties called Universal’s “Premier hotels.” Universal now places them in its Signature Collection, but not every hotel in that collection includes Express Unlimited.
Loews Sapphire Falls Resort and Universal Helios Grand Hotel do not include this complimentary Express Unlimited benefit. Check the specific hotel’s benefits rather than relying on its category.

Is Express Pass included for everyone staying in the hotel room?
Yes. Each registered guest staying in the room at Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, or Portofino Bay receives the included Express Unlimited benefit, subject to the room’s occupancy limits.
This can make a significant difference when comparing costs for a family or group. Separately purchased Express Passes are priced per person, so you need to include everyone who wants Express access in your calculation.
For accurate pricing, your hotel reservation should include all guests staying in the room.
What is the difference between Express Pass and Express Unlimited?
Standard Universal Express provides Express queue access once per participating attraction. Universal Express Unlimited allows you to use the Express queue multiple times at participating attractions throughout the day.
Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, and Portofino Bay include Express Unlimited.
When comparing a hotel stay against separately purchased passes, make sure you compare the same pass type and park coverage. Standard Express may cost less, but it does not offer the same repeat-ride benefit.
Express also means a shorter queue, not a guaranteed walk straight onto every attraction. Some attractions do not participate.
How do you compare a hotel with included Express against buying it separately?
Add the full hotel cost to the cost of Express for your party, then compare that amount with a hotel that includes Express Unlimited.
For the hotel without included Express, account for:
Your complete hotel stay, including taxes and applicable fees.
Express for each person who wants to use it.
Each park day you want Express coverage.
The correct parks and pass type.
Compare that total with Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, or Portofino Bay for your dates and registered guests.
Keep park admission consistent between both options. Neither the hotel’s included Express benefit nor a purchased Express Pass replaces your theme park ticket.
Example: A family of four with two park days
The following numbers are hypothetical. They are not current Universal prices or a vacation quote.
Imagine a family of four comparing a two-night hotel stay with two days at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
Their hotel without included Express costs $600 for the stay. If comparable Express Unlimited costs $150 per person, per day, their Express calculation would be:
Four people × two days × $150 = $1,200.
That brings their combined hotel and Express cost to $1,800.
If Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, or Portofino Bay costs $1,200 for the same stay, with Express Unlimited included for all four registered guests, that option saves $600.
Actual prices may produce a different result. This example shows why it pays to compare more than the room rate. Vacation math has a way of making the “cheaper” option surprisingly expensive.

Do you get Express Pass on check-in and checkout days?
Yes. Your included Express Unlimited benefit begins when your hotel room key is issued and continues through park closing on your checkout day.
That means a one-night stay can provide eligible Express access on both check-in and checkout days.
Complete hotel check-in and receive your room key before heading to the parks to use the benefit. Your room may not be ready when you arrive, so factor hotel check-in into your park schedule.
The benefit applies to participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure during normal park operating hours. It does not cover separately ticketed events.
Is one night at a Universal hotel worth it for Express Pass?
A one-night stay can be worth comparing if you want Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure on two consecutive days.
Because the benefit includes check-in and checkout days, one hotel night can cover two eligible park days for registered guests.
Whether it saves money depends on the room’s total cost and what you would otherwise spend on lodging and Express.
If this involves switching hotels, consider the time needed to pack, move luggage, and check in again. Your Adventure Advisor can compare the savings alongside those logistics.
Does the included hotel Express Pass work at Epic Universe?
No. The complimentary Express Unlimited benefit at Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, and Portofino Bay does not work at Universal Epic Universe.
It covers participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure. Universal Volcano Bay is also excluded.
If you want Express access at Epic Universe, you need to purchase an Express product that specifically covers that park, subject to availability.
For a vacation focused mainly on Epic Universe, the hotel’s included Express benefit may contribute less value to your itinerary. Count the benefit only toward the park days where you can use it.

Does a hotel’s Express Pass let you visit both parks?
The included Express Unlimited benefit works at participating attractions in both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, but your admission ticket determines which parks you can enter.
Express access and park admission are separate.
If you want to visit both parks on the same day, you need admission that allows that. Park-to-Park admission is also required to ride the Hogwarts Express between the parks.
Our guide explains the difference: Do You Need a Park-to-Park Ticket at Universal Orlando? When the Upgrade Is Worth It.
When is upgrading to a hotel with Express the better value?
Upgrading may offer better value when several registered guests want Express Unlimited for multiple days at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
It is especially worth comparing when:
Everyone in your room plans to use Express.
You want Express on more than one eligible park day.
Your family enjoys repeating participating attractions.
You already intended to purchase Express Unlimited.
The more separately purchased Express access you would need, the more important the hotel comparison becomes.
However, the upgrade does not automatically save money. Your exact hotel and Express prices determine the result.
When is buying Express separately the better choice?
Buying Express separately may cost less when fewer people need it, you want it for only one day, or the hotel with included Express costs substantially more.
It also allows you to choose a hotel based on other priorities, such as room layout, amenities, atmosphere, or location.
If standard, once-per-attraction Express meets your needs, compare that option too. You do not necessarily need Unlimited if your family only wants to experience each participating attraction once.
The goal is to purchase the access that fits your plans.
Should you book a hotel with included Express if you will not use it?
The included Express benefit should not count as savings if you do not plan to use it.
Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, and Portofino Bay may still be appealing for their location, dining, atmosphere, or amenities. But if Express is not part of your plans, a lower-priced hotel may better fit your budget.
The same applies if most of your park time will be at Epic Universe, where this complimentary benefit is not valid.
Choose your hotel around your actual vacation—not the dollar value of a perk you will leave unused.
Can you wait until you arrive to buy Express Pass?
You can purchase Express during your visit if it is available, but inventory is limited and passes can sell out.
If Express is an important part of your vacation, compare options before booking your hotel and finalizing your budget.
Before purchasing, confirm the date, included parks, and whether you are selecting standard Express or Express Unlimited. Coverage depends on the product you choose.
