Is Universal Express Pass Worth It? A 2026 Guide to When You Do—and Don't—Need It

Universal Express Pass can be one of the best upgrades you add to a Universal Orlando vacation. It can also be money you didn't actually need to spend. So, is Universal Express Pass worth it? The answer depends much more on your family's travel dates, hotel, number of park days, priorities, and tolerance for waiting in line than on any blanket yes-or-no recommendation.

For a family visiting during a busy travel period with only a couple of park days and a long must-do list, Express can be incredibly valuable. For another family staying five days, traveling during a less crowded time, and perfectly happy taking things slowly, it may not be necessary at all.

And now that Epic Universe is part of Universal Orlando, there's another layer to the decision. Express is available at Epic Universe, but the complimentary Express Unlimited benefit included with select Universal hotels does not currently extend there. That makes understanding exactly what you're getting—and where you can use it—more important than ever.

What Is Universal Express Pass?

Universal Express allows you to use a separate Express queue with a shorter wait at participating attractions. The important word there is **shorter**. Express does not mean you'll walk directly onto every attraction, and you may still encounter a wait, particularly on busy days.

Express is separate from your theme park admission, so you'll still need valid admission for the park you're visiting. Not every attraction participates, and participation can change, which is why we always recommend checking Universal's current information for your travel dates.

Universal Express vs. Universal Express Unlimited

There are two names you'll see frequently when researching Express: **Universal Express** and **Universal Express Unlimited**. Standard Universal Express allows you to use the Express queue once per participating attraction, while Universal Express Unlimited allows you to use it multiple times.

Which one matters to your family depends heavily on how you tour the parks. If your goal is to experience each attraction once and keep moving, standard Express may be all you need. If your family finds a favorite attraction and immediately wants to ride it again—and then perhaps again because apparently we're living here now—Unlimited can be much more valuable.

How Does Express Work at Each Universal Orlando Park?

At Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, Express is available on many attractions and can be especially useful if you're trying to cover a lot of ground in a limited amount of time. This is particularly true for families using Park-to-Park admission and trying to experience portions of both parks in the same day.

Volcano Bay has its own Express options for participating attractions, separate from the Express products used at the theme parks and from the complimentary hotel benefit we'll discuss below.

Epic Universe is where travelers need to pay especially close attention to current information. The park opened in 2025, so some of the planning advice still circulating online is outdated.

How Does Express Work at Epic Universe in 2026?

As of September 2026, Universal sells a separate **1-Day Universal Express Pass for Epic Universe**, providing one-time Express access at participating Epic Universe rides and attractions. Separate Epic Universe theme park admission is required.

Because Epic Universe is still relatively new and participating attractions and procedures can change, check Universal's current information for your travel date rather than building your plans around an old attraction list.

There's also one very important hotel distinction: **the complimentary Express Unlimited benefit included at select Universal hotels does not currently apply at Epic Universe.** If you want Express for your Epic Universe day, you'll need to consider that separately.

Which Universal Hotels Include Express Unlimited?

Three Universal Orlando hotels currently include complimentary Universal Express Unlimited for registered guests with valid theme park admission:

* Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

* Hard Rock Hotel

* Loews Royal Pacific Resort

The included benefit is valid at participating attractions at **Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure**, but not at Epic Universe or Volcano Bay.

This is one of the reasons we recommend comparing the cost of your **entire vacation** rather than choosing a hotel based only on the nightly room rate. If you're already considering purchasing Express for several members of your family, the difference between another Universal hotel plus Express and one of these hotels with Express Unlimited included may be smaller than it initially appears.

That doesn't mean Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, or Royal Pacific will always be the better deal. Your dates, family size, room needs, and park plans all matter. It simply means your hotel and Express decisions should often be made together rather than separately.

Universal Express Pass vs. Early Park Admission

Universal Express and Early Park Admission are two different benefits, although it's easy to see why first-time visitors sometimes confuse them.

Express helps reduce your wait at participating attractions during the park day. Early Park Admission allows eligible guests to enter a participating Universal theme park up to an hour before regular park opening, with valid theme park admission, and experience select attractions. Participating parks and attractions can vary.

If you're staying at a Universal hotel, Early Park Admission can give you a valuable head start even if you don't have Express. If you have access to both benefits, using them strategically can make for an extremely efficient park day.

Neither benefit automatically eliminates the need for the other. Whether either—or both—makes sense comes back to your family's itinerary.

When Is Universal Express Pass Worth It?

There are some trips where we'd strongly consider adding Express, and **short trips are near the top of that list**. If you only have one or two days to accomplish a long list of attractions, every hour you spend waiting matters more.

Crowd levels also matter. During major school breaks, holidays, and other high-demand travel periods, Express can become much more valuable. Crowd patterns aren't perfectly predictable, so we wouldn't recommend purchasing something solely because a crowd calendar labeled your date a certain color, but your travel dates should absolutely be part of the decision.

Then there's something much less complicated: **How much does your family hate waiting in line?** Some families can happily talk, snack, play games, and hang out in a 45-minute queue. Other families are approximately nine minutes away from mutiny. If long waits are going to make everyone miserable, Express may improve the quality of your vacation even if you technically could experience the parks without it.

Express can also make a lot of sense for thrill-focused families with lengthy must-do lists. If your group wants to experience as many attractions as possible—or repeat favorites with an Unlimited product—the time savings can add up quickly.

And remember that time saved doesn't have to mean squeezing in another ride. You can use it for a sit-down meal, exploring the Wizarding World, shopping, seeing entertainment, taking a resort break, or simply enjoying the park without constantly watching the clock. Sometimes the value of Express isn't that you rode 17 attractions. It's that you didn't spend your entire vacation staring at the back of someone's T-shirt.

When Can You Reasonably Skip Universal Express?

There are also plenty of Universal vacations where we wouldn't automatically recommend spending the extra money.

If you have four, five, or more park days, you have much more flexibility than someone trying to experience everything in two days. You don't necessarily have to get to every attraction today because you'll have another opportunity later in your trip.

Travel dates matter here too. If you're visiting during a period when standby waits are relatively manageable, you may decide Express isn't worth the additional expense. We'd rather see a family spend that money on something they'll value more than purchase an upgrade simply because they think a Universal vacation is "supposed" to include it.

Your family's attraction preferences matter as well. A family with two thrill-loving teenagers who want to ride everything may get much more value from Express than a family with younger children who will skip many attractions because of height requirements or interests.

And if your family simply doesn't mind waiting, that's a perfectly valid reason to skip it. There is no prize waiting at the end of your vacation for completing the maximum possible number of rides.

Could Another Park Day Make More Sense Than Express?

Sometimes it can, and this is a comparison travelers don't always think to make.

If your concern is not having enough time, there are essentially two ways to create more breathing room: **spend less time waiting or give yourself more days.** Express tackles the first problem; adding another park day tackles the second.

Depending on your family size, travel dates, current ticket and Express pricing, and hotel plans, another park day may sometimes be the better value. On another trip, Express may make considerably more sense.

This is why we don't love blanket advice like "You absolutely need Express" or "Express is a waste of money." Without knowing the rest of the vacation, neither statement is particularly useful.

Should You Stay at a Universal Hotel That Includes Express Instead?

If you're considering Express for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, compare the total vacation costs before choosing your hotel.

Instead of looking only at nightly hotel rates, compare the cost of one hotel **plus** the Express products your family wants with the cost of Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, or Royal Pacific, where Express Unlimited for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure is included.

For some families and dates, one of those hotels can be an excellent value. For others, a different hotel plus separately purchased Express—or no Express at all—will make more sense.

Remember to keep Epic Universe separate in that calculation. The included hotel Express benefit doesn't currently cover your Epic Universe day.

What About Families With Younger Children?

Express can still be useful with younger children, but we'd look closely at what your family actually plans to experience before spending the money.

If several members of your family aren't tall enough for or aren't interested in many of the attractions you'll be prioritizing, you may not get the same value from Express as a family planning to ride almost everything. On the other hand, younger children can also have less patience for long waits, which may make Express particularly valuable.

Age alone doesn't answer the question. Your children's heights, interests, patience, and must-do attractions tell us much more.

It's not. Express is separate from theme park admission, so you'll still need valid admission for the park you're visiting.

Assuming Express Means No Wait

Express means a shorter queue, not necessarily no queue at all. You can still encounter waits, especially during busy periods.

Assuming Every Attraction Has Express

Not every attraction participates, and participation can change. Always check Universal's current information for your travel dates.

Assuming Every Universal Hotel Includes Express

They don't. Only select Universal hotels include complimentary Express Unlimited. Other Universal hotels offer valuable benefits, including Early Park Admission, but that isn't the same thing as Express.

Assuming Your Included Hotel Express Covers Every Park

The Express Unlimited benefit included at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, and Royal Pacific currently covers participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure—not Epic Universe or Volcano Bay.

Buying Express Before Looking at Your Whole Vacation

This may be the biggest mistake of all. Look at your dates, hotel, park days, family size, priorities, and budget before deciding. Express may be the best choice, a hotel with included Express may make more sense, another park day may serve you better, or you may decide you don't need Express at all.

Any of those can be the right answer.

So, Is Universal Express Pass Worth It?

For the right family and the right vacation, absolutely. Universal Express can save valuable park time and make busy days considerably more enjoyable, particularly for shorter trips, busy travel periods, families with long must-do lists, repeat riders, and anyone whose idea of vacation does not include voluntarily spending hours in standby queues.

But we don't believe every family needs it. If you have plenty of park days, manageable travel dates, a shorter attraction list, or a family that doesn't mind waiting, skipping Express can be a completely reasonable choice.

The better question isn't simply, **"Is Universal Express Pass worth it?"** It's **"Is Universal Express Pass worth it for our family, on our dates, with our hotel, park tickets, priorities, and budget?"**

Once you look at it that way, the decision becomes much easier.
