Summer Fun at Universal Orlando Resort

The Universal Orlando Resort is home to two amazing theme parks, one out of this world water park, seven beautiful award winning on-site resorts, and CityWalk, a great place to eat, drink, and shop! Universal Orlando is the perfect place to spend your family vacation this summer and we are going to go over some ways you can survive the hot Florida temperatures and have a blast doing it!

One of my favorite things about the Universal Orlando Resort is that everything is in such close proximity to each other! Six of the on-site resorts are within walking distance to the front gates of both theme parks and CityWalk. Hard Rock Hotel is the closest with a short five minute walk to the gates of Universal Studios and Cabana Bay is the furthest with closer to a 20 minute walk. All resorts offer other modes of transportation including water taxis and shuttle buses if walking isn't for you! This makes it easy to head back to the resort in the middle of the day to take a pool break and cool off, maybe even take a short nap, and then head back into the parks in the evenings when it's a little cooler.

Islands of Adventure is where you can find THREE super fun water rides to help keep you cool! Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges, Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls, and Jurassic Park River Adventure. It doesn't hurt to wear a bathing suit under your clothes, because you are going to get WET! I also recommend you take a ziplock bag and a pair of sandals or flip flops. Change out of your socks and tennis shoes, put them in the ziplock bag and in your backpack, and slip the sandals or flip flops on. This way you don't have to walk around with soggy feet! If you don't want to stay wet for to long, there are People Dryers outside of all of these rides. They are an additional fee but they do fit more than one person at a time.

If you are traveling with littles that aren't big enough for the above rides, there are several play areas and splash pads locate around Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. If I Ran a Zoo is an interactive play area in Seuss Landing that features a wet play area. Hop on over to Universal Studios and you'll find the Curious George Goes to Town Play Area. This is a two story play area with TONS to explore! Make sure you pack swim diapers and water shoes!

Make sure you take advantage of all the indoor shows and attractions during the heat of the day if you're not taking a pool break back at the resort. At Islands of Adventure you can catch some A/C during The Amazing Adventures of Spider Man, Cat in the Hat, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (just be careful with this last one if you suffer from motion sickness). At Universal Studios you can enjoy Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers: The Ride 3D, Men in Black Alien Attack, Shrek 4D, The Simpsons Ride, E.T. Adventure, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, and several others! Take the Hogwarts Express from one park to the other to avoid walking that much further in the heat! Just remember, you'll need a park to park ticket in order to ride it AND the scene is different going each way!

Remember to stay hydrated! This can ruin a trip so fast and who wants to spend their vacation suffering from dehydration in their hotel room?! FREE ice water is available at most quick service restaurants and some kiosks. Universal Orlando Resort also allows you to bring in your own bottled water, up to 2 liters. Drink, drink, drink!

I swear by cooling towels such as Frogg Toggs. Get them wet and keep them around your neck. Bring a ziplock bag so when you're not using it you can stash it in there without getting all of your stuff wet. Misting fans and fans you can wear around your neck are also life savers in the heat. Make sure you buy these before you go, they are pricey in the parks!

If you purchase a 3-park ticket you can spend a full day over at Volcano Bay. This new water park, opened in 2017, is within walking distance from Cabana Bay, Adventura and Sapphire Falls. Cabana Bay just opened two new towers that offer views of the Krakatua Volcano which is breathtaking at night. All of the other resorts, and Sapphire Falls if you don't want to walk, offer shuttle transportation to the park. When staying on-site you can take advantage of Early Park Admission which is a great way to ride all of the more popular rides before the park officially opens and gives you a better chance at scoring prime seating if you're not renting a Cabana. Remember to bring your own towel, Volcano Bay does not provide them!

The most important tip I can offer is to pace yourself! It's a good idea to try and spend 4-5 days in the three parks so you don't have to rush but can see everything they each have to offer. Aside from the three parks you can play a round of mini golf at Hollywood Drive-In Golf, enjoy a movie at Universal Cinemark, or watch the spectacular Blue Man Group show. All of these can be found at CityWalk along with some great shopping and dining options. Don't burn yourself out in the parks, take frequent breaks and pool days in between park days. Remember to relax and enjoy yourself, it is a vacation after all!

Coming this summer, June 13th to be exact, is a new ride in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! Hagrid's Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure takes the place of Dragon Challenge in Hogsmead at Islands of Adventure. Also opening later this month, June 27th, is part of the new Endless Summer Resort, Surfside Inn & Suites.
